About me
Dr. Barkley has spent more than 45 years studying ADHD, from the earliest work on executive function theory to a retirement spent putting decades of lectures online for free.
After serving in the US Air Force from 1968 to 1972, including a tour of duty in Vietnam, Barkley earned his Bachelor's degree with Honors from the University of North Carolina in 1973, then his Ph.D. with Honors in Clinical Psychology from Bowling Green State University in 1977. He went on to a career as a professor of psychiatry and neurology, teaching at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, the Medical University of South Carolina, and Virginia Commonwealth University before fully retiring in 2021.
Over that career he published 25 books, rating scales, and clinical manuals across 43 editions, plus more than 300 scientific articles and book chapters on ADHD, and founded and edits The ADHD Report, a clinical newsletter now in its 28th year. He has delivered more than 800 invited lectures in more than 30 countries and appeared on 60 Minutes, the Today Show, Good Morning America, CBS Sunday Morning, and CNN.
In retirement, he has posted more than 30 hours of his lectures to YouTube, organized into playlists for laypeople and professionals alike. He notes on that channel that he cannot give advice on personal questions for ethical reasons; his work speaks as a scientist and educator, not as a personal coach.
